minke whales

We were lucky enough to see a Minke whale yesterday and these photos were taken from the garden.

This was the only still shot I got that actually showed the whale!

I did slightly better after switching to video and the rest of the photos are taken from them, although I have to learn to make better use of the tripod...

It was hard to judge the length but their dorsal fins are quite far back and apparently they  are usually about 24 feet

Neither the whale nor the man in the creelboat seemed at all bothered by the other's presence

This is a bit blurry but it does show the enormous mouth
The whale was still there for a while this morning and others seemed quite sure it was a female with a calf although we didn't see that unfortunately. But a privilege to get the chance to see such a magnificent creature!

I enjoyed these photos tremendously! So glad you shared. Here in Hawaii we have the Humpback whales visit us in the winter. I have yet to take any photos of them; always too far away on a whale boat tour, plus the whales appear and disappear quickly.

Thank you both, I'm glad you liked them. I agree Carol, its not easy to get photos - I have lots of splashes though :) Sometimes its just more fun to watch and not bother with the camera!
