garden bird watch

This weekend is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in the UK. It only takes an hour, and you simply note down the birds you see and send in your results, which you can do easily online. You don't have to have a garden either, any spot will do! You can find more details here: Big Garden Birdwatch. You have until Feb 17th to submit your results.

The results help the RSPB create a snapshot of bird numbers across the country. Last year over 600,000 people took part, which is fantastic. It seems house sparrows and starlings have seen a dramatic decline in recent years...although not in our garden apparently; their only competition yesterday came from a few blackbirds and a lone dunnock.

This is a tiny snippet of a painting I recently completed, I'll show the whole thing later in the year. Would have been nice to see a barn owl in the garden yesterday!

The postman recently bought a copy of a new watercolour book from Quarto which used some of my work (below). I must admit I don't often buy art instruction books so I really don't know what makes a good one or not, but artist/author Robin Berry certainly knows her stuff and I enjoyed it.

I appear to be a little swamped with work and 'things' just now so my apologies in advance if postings here are a little erratic over the coming weeks while I catch up with myself. Its always lovely to hear from you if you stop by though, and meanwhile I am painting as fast as I can :)

I always try to take the time to do the Garden Birdwatch and it is lovely to just sit and watch for an hour. Nothing really exotic but the bluetits are always fun.

the barn owl is amazing!
Don't paint to fast, your patience is amazing.

I agree Jarnie, mind you a bluetit would be pretty exciting up here!

Thank you Andrew :) Your rhino is coming on fantastically (is that a word?!). Great work.

Tracy...is THIS how you "jot" down the birds you see in the garden? LOL! I love your drawings almost as much as your paintings! Beautiful!

'Our' birds know when we do the garden birdwatch. They seem to wait in vast numbers in the garden next door. Once the hour is up they can then pile back onto our feeders!

Ha Mary :) But bear in mind I was sitting in the warmth of the kitchen watching them!

I know just what you mean Jerry, I swear they subscribe to the RSPB and know it's coming. Seems to often be the quietest weekend in the garden, nevermind hour! Thank you for stopping by - and I really enjoyed looking through your blog!
