Keeping Watch (Common Seal) © Tracy Hall 2010
1.75" x 4" watercolour on board (ghost penny shown for scale)
A wander along the beach here is usually accompanied by one or more seals; they'll keep pace with you and their natural curiosity means its sometimes hard to work out who is more intrigued by the other's presence. My latest miniature painting hopefully captures some of that 'watching you watching me' business. The old norse name for Orkney was 'Seal Island' and both common (or harbour) and grey seals can be found here.

Quarto Publishing got in touch some time ago to use some of my paintings in their forthcoming title 'The New Encyclopedia of Watercolour Techniques' (Search Press) and I'm pleased to say a copy reached me today - and full marks to the postie who had to walk down the track with it! I didn't see the earlier editions but this one looks quite good and there is some lovely work and demos included.

If you're in the UK I hope you have been able to enjoy the recent snow...and haven't been too inconvenienced by it. Its very pretty but hopefully it won't hang around too much longer! This is the beach here this morning -

Another wonderful picture and congratulation on the book. Your beach looks very pretty in the snow. Sadly no snow as yet in my area otherwise I would be the oldest grandmother on the toboggans.
I love your mini seal. How do you get so much detail in such a small painting, pretty amazing! Congratulations on your inclusion in the Encyclopedia of Watercolor Techniques, very impressive. The beach photo is fabulous, what a wonderful place to live by:)
Hi Tracy, how wonderful that you have your paintings in the encyclopedia. Your work is awesome.
I always get so excited when there is mention of a new Tracy Hall painting! I'm never disapointed either! Your seal gets my "seal of approval"! Time and again! So beautiful! And congratulations on the lovely entry in the encyclopedia! Wow!
Stunning Tracy, and congrats on the book. The snow is quite deep and its still falling. Your right it is pretty and good fun watching the dog play in it!
Wonderful painting and great news about the book. We've just had a dusting of snow so far but I'm loving it...very paintable :)
What a thrill Tracy - I am so proud for you and the seal is absolutely gorgeous!!! You are amazing!!!
I am always left stunned with each new painting Tracy...and this is no exception. It is as if I should blink he will go underwater...you are incredible and I love that I can watch as each wonderful piece comes off your fingertips!
Congrats on the book...I"m going to check it out. The painting....just love it...what a sweet little face
Hi Tracy, Love the seal and the water! Your color choices are perfect! Great title too! Congratulations on being in the book!
Your beach is beautiful with the light dusting of snow. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks for the lovely comments. We've been snowed in but finally able to get the car up the track today. Hope the rest of you in the UK are coping - we're not really set up for this kind of weather here!
What an amazing job you did on the seal Tracy - love it! It's 31 F outside here right now, but in my head, I'm still experiencing August's heat and humidity. Every season, I think the transition gets tougher. I still have fall decor up in my house...I'll embrace winter eventually. But for now, I'll enjoy your seal painting on a lovely sunny day.
A big, well deserved congrats on the book Tracy. Your work is top-notch and SHOULD be in a book!!! Hope I get the chance to see the book someday...
Thanks Carol, what a sweet thing to say! I must try that, Deb, I WANT august heat in my head!!
