The Ross Fountain, Edinburgh © Tracy Hall 2010
3.25" x 2.25" watercolour on rag board
Wandering through Princes Street Gardens over the summer I was captivated by this fountain (much to the annoyance of small people with me) but especially by the wonderful light of the morning sun hitting it. In reality there is much more of it than I have painted here - I chose to concentrate on the middle section (it was my favourite bit) which has a ring of nymphs representing the arts, science, poetry and industry, with some long suffering mermaids supporting rather heavy looking dishes on their shoulders.
I think this is the most ambitious miniature I have attempted to date and it took ages, although admittedly it did keep getting put to one side. It was a huge challenge and I wanted to see if I could do it. I'm pleased with how it turned out but somehow don't think I'll be rushing to try anything similar again soon!

I find this watercolor most pleasing to the eye. I am so captivated that it is so small in scale but so powerful in volume. I feel you have out done yourself and can hardly wait for the next. No pressure!!!!
Hi Tracy, It was well worth the effort! Great job on the way you handled the water. I love how the drops are splashing out of the bowls. Also like the way the work pops out from the background! It glows!
wow, Tracy, this is gorgeous! Well worth the time you spent on it.
WOW! This is one of my favorite things you have ever done. I love your nature pictures but this is just amazing!! And just for the record, the "mermaids" as you called them are Tritons (male)or Melusines (female). Merpeople are a passion of mine as is heraldry. :)
I'm speechless! Such a wonderful artwork! My compliments.
This is so amazing, Tracy. I admire your painting very much.
Really wonderful Tracy. You captured the fountain and water beautifully.
Tracy it is simply beautiful! Amazing that it is so tiny, too. You have out done yourself!
Beautiful Tracy, you captured the light coming through the water and I can imagine being there. Great work!
Ooooh Tracy - this one is stunning. I can feel the droplets from the fountain - fantastic work!!!! :)
Wow! This painting is breath taking. I am curious about the time you have spent for this painting.
This is outstanding - the detail in this picture is wonderful especially when you consider its tiny size! You must have such a steady hand and a lot of patience!
Thank you all so much for your comments, much appreciated and I'm very pleased you like it, perhaps it was worth the effort!
Thank you for explaining about the merpeople, Tristan, that's fascinating. So these are melusines!
D.D I have no idea how long it took sorry. Probably just as well.
Woawzaaaa! Have to echo all the comments above. One incredible miniature Tracy it was so definitely worth the effort :D
Your gift of observation is so acute! This is a wonderful miniature, Tracy!Your use of white had me staring!
I realized I did not explain why they are melusines...a mermaid with a double tail is a melusine and a merman with a double tail is a Triton...
WOW Tracy, this is one of the very best paintings you have done so far. What a challenge this must have been for you. It is perfect in every way. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
Hola Tracy me ncanta tu obra es genial los trazos, muy bonitos felicidades,un saludo desde las islas Canarias.
Well, Tracy, you certainly DID do it!!! It is simply fabulous. I also find I am drawn somehow to fountains. I haven't found any quite this extravagant tho!!! Gorgeous work, I can understand your reluctance to do another anytime soon, but it is certainly worth the effort you put into it. Wonderful, wonderful...
