penguin miniature painting

'Catching Rays' (King Penguins) © Tracy Hall 2010
2.25" x 1.75" watercolour on board

A new miniature of King Penguins with a ghost penny for size. It felt good to be back working on a small scale for a little break and I really enjoyed painting these beautiful birds soaking up the sun.

These penguins are so happy and so lined up Tracy. I can't decide which one I like the most. The technique is perfect like always. Great success on a big scale for a small painting! Thank you, Irina
P.S.
I always had a question what quality paper do you use? What brand?

And the painting is beautiful too Tracy - the shadows on the penguins belly are so effective!! :)

Thank you, I'm pleased you like it. Irina I'm using Crescent Premium Watercolor Board (hot pressed) for the miniatures just now. I haven't found a surface I like better.

I am always amazed by how much detail you get into your paintings without them looking too busy. This one is beautiful.

Tracy what a great, warm painting...You can almost feel the heat! How do you do that ghost penny thing? I keep meaning to figure it out...I thought of copying a penny onto drafting film.

Lovely, and it seems as if they live by sun and dinner...nothing else is important!

Thank you Gillian and Marie. Much appreciated.

Deb, for the ghost penny thing:
1/scan a penny then make it into a transparent layer in PS and save it. Now you can use it again and again.
2/Open the painting file and drag the penny in where you want it. (Make sure the resolution at this stage is the same for both painting and penny so the scale is right).
3/In the penny layer, select 'blending options' and set the opacity to what you want in 'general blending'.
4/ Flatten the layers and save.

I hope that makes sense? Can't take credit for the idea though - that was Wes S and Barbara F :)

Beautiful piece. The whole thing- background, shadows, heads. It all works so well. Just lovely.
I wish I could figure out that penny thing- I don't know how to do the ps thing. :( And I'm forever forgetting to put the penny in for the photo...
