Hmm, thought we were seeing more wasps than usual this summer...now we know why! Fortunately this is in a shed rather than the house. I'm trying very hard to start liking wasps just a bit having been terrified of them my whole life. This isn't helping though. Even if the structure itself is pretty amazing.

Ok now Tracy.....I can't tell the difference between a really great photo and one of your paintings.
Which is this? :)
At the beginning I thought it is your watercolor. Is it? What a wonderful idea for the artwork. Just look at this maze created by nature. Amazing! I hope you survive this disaster Tracy. Have a good day, Irina
Tracy, it's a testament to your painting skills that I looked several times to be sure this was not a painting you also made of the wasp nest!
So sorry about the wasps, I'm terrified of them too!
I think if I ever made a painting of the wasps nest I would consider myself cured... :) Shudder. This is a photo.
Brilliant pic!
Great photo and I also thought it might be one of your paintings.
We get these same wasps here and I've always known them as paper wasps. They build in any dry spot and some of the nests can be as big as a football. However, they still have all the usual characteristics of wasps. :(
I think this would make a brilliant painting.
So do you manage to co-habit with them ok jeanette? I'm nervous as I have to go in that shed every day, but don't really want to be mean and get it 'removed' unless we have to. You can probably tell wasps are not overly common in Orkney :) You can probably also tell I'm a wimp :)))
It is a beautiful structure. I've seen HUGE ones, empty, that sill give me the keeps, because - yeah, me too - a fear of the tiny buzzers clings to me. :)
Yiikes Tracy! I would be a wimmp too!
Oh, I don't co-habit well with them Tracy. If they're in a fairly unused spot I let them be. If they are somewhere that gets a lot of traffic, they have to go.
The nests are removed at night, directing a hose at it as it breaks down quickly then they disperse. It also involves wearing a lot of protective clothing and running like hell!
I'm with you - They creep me out! But what an amazing hive. We don't grow them here in Virginia like that! We mostly have the kind that live just one or a dozen in a nest at a time, and their nests are ashen in color.
When you have them removed, you should save that nest for still lifes!
Ah, thanks for that jeanette. Still debating which way to go! It would be nice to keep the nest Deb, but I think they get destroyed in the removal process.
Oh gosh Tracy, those look exactly like the bees we have here! Our wasps are all black and have long legs and a truly viscous sting! But the nest is a wasp nest - no doubt about that. It's really lovely.
