2" x 2" watercolour on board
Back on the beach with this new painting. Pied wagtails are always such a pleasure to see flitting about with their tails bobbing enthusiastically, and I'm always looking for ways to incorporate old peices of machinery that were dumped on the shore years ago, now rusting amongst the stones. I remembered to take some photos as I was working this time, so there are four stages shown above.
I suppose its litter, but I rather like the old rusty metal - can't say I feel quite the same about the amount of plastic that gets washed up though! Every spring there is an event in Orkney called 'Bag the Bruck' when locals descend on the beaches to try and clear up some of the rubbish. The quantity collected is staggering.
Update: Society of Botanical Artists Silver Jubilee Exhibition

I was delighted to finally hear that my two miniatures (above) have been selected for the Society's upcoming exhibition at Westminster Central Hall, London. (Thanks to Pam and Katherine for helping me find out - postal deliveries seem to have been a bit sporadic here lately!). This is always a glorious show and absolutely worth going to see if you can. It runs from Friday April 16th until Sunday 25th, 10am to 5pm with free admission and daily demonstrations from some of the leading botanical artists in a variety of media.

Lovely new mini Tracy. Great idea to do four images like this, you can really appreciate the depth of colour as it builds up. I also love the old rusty metal. There must be a wonderful community spirit up in Orkney for everyone to turn out to clean up their beaches every spring. (Shame it is needed though.) Lesley
Love this composition Tracy. The old metal machinery. It really asks to be painted.
Lovely tones and the little wagtail.
Beautiful.
Interesting to see your miniature work in progress. Another nice painting.
Congratulations Tracy on the Botanical Society Silver Jubilee selections. They are both beautiful. I agree with Dors and Leslie, the rusty wheel adds interest and character.
Congratulations Tracy on your work being selected for the Society of Botanical Artists Silver Jubilee Exhibition! Two beautiful works!
Thanks for sharing the progression of the "Pied Wagtail" painting. Wow, and it's small1 I love the rusted part too. You get to use that great rust color!
Great work Tracy! Congrats on the nomination ... you deserve it!
Congratulations on the exhibition Tracy! Those pieces are so deserving! And I love your rusty wheel and bird...I am also drawn to the old rusty pieces...I love old barns that are about to be condemned. You can't use them, but they are wonderful to paint.
I'm nearly a month behind on my blog reading, so I'll condense all my delight in your recent works to this one comment -- and congrats on the jubilee show acceptance!!
Tracy, if anyone can paint rust and make it look exceptionally interesting, it's you! This is beautiful! And thanks for posting the work in progress. It's always such a delight to look at your process.
I too become distressed at the sight of so many plastic bags floating around. I bring my cloth bags whenever I go to the grocery but then the check out person inevitably proceeds to put my goods in plastic BEFORE placing them in my canvas bags! Boy do they get a chewing out! (I get a little hot-headed on occassion)
Congrats on the exhibit! Your paintings deserve a special spot in all the famous galleries and halls!
How wonderful to see how you progress your miniatures
I'm so pleased to have been able to handle those miniatures I took to the SBA and look at them up close. Sooooo much more impressive in close up, they were absolutely amazing and like I said I'm fully expecting them to get some sort of recognisition.
I forgot to ask - what sort of board are you using for your miniatures?
Thanks ever so much everyone, I'm a bit behind in replying sorry.
Very big thank you Katherine for all your help! I agree they look better in real life, I have a devil of a job scanning them!
The board I LOVE is called crescent premium watercolour board: http://www.dickblick.com/products/crescent-premium-watercolor-board/ but I have to get kind friends in the US to send it to me as you can't get it in Europe.
BUT, I often use Saunders Waterford watercolour board for my commercial work and shall be trying it soon for a miniature to see how it fairs. Its available from Ken Bromley over here: http://www.artsupplies.co.uk/ci_min5.php?item_id=2038.
Your work is always a delight to muse over! Congrats on getting two into such a wonderful show again!!! You are just doing amazing things! You must eat energy pills of some kind...you should market them for the rest of us! Ha! I just love seeing your minis...they always seem big because they are composed so well!
More stunning pieces. Love the bird and coneflowers, but especially love that waterlily piece. I envy you your talent. Everything that comes off your brush is exquisite...
