Work in Progress - detail © Tracy Hall 2010Muddy boots and wooden floors, hedgehogs, eggs and farmhouse doors.... A word about eggs - don't even try and paint an egg without a model in front of you. You only think you know what they look like. You don't, particularly when they're plural and especially when broken :) These still have a few more layers to go but the whole painting (this is only a little bit of it) is a full sheet and coming together gradually. I'll show it in its entirety later in the year.

This is going to be a great painting. Your textures are always so well done. I haven't attempted to paint eggs with or without a model. They're so simple, I'm sure they will be challenging to paint.
This is going to be wonderful and a full sheet too!
You are too funny Tracy about painting eggs, but it's so true they are not easily done, yet these look great, and look forward to seeing the final piece. Is this one a mini or a larger work?
So much to look at in this tiny painting Tracy - I just love it, all the different textures really add to the interest!!!
Hi Michelle, I regretted putting a basket of eggs in it almost immediately as they are surprisingly time consuming!
Thanks Vicki and Mona and Karen, its a snippet of a larger peice destined for jigsaw puzzles, 20" x 28" final size. I think one of these scenes would be fun to do in miniature now you mention it!
Tracy I am always in awe of how you compose your paintings...there is always so much fun information in them...I can hardly wait to see what you do with this!!!
I absolutely LOVE this! First, hedgehogs are my favorite animal, though African Pygmy Hedgehogs are dearest to my heart, European hedgies are almost as adorable. Love the composition. Can't wait to see the final painting, and let us know where to get the puzzle. I'd like to own one.
Beautiful! I love the colors and tectures.

Hi Tracy! I used to paint but haven't for maybe 10 to 12 years. I have been getting the feeling again but I am soooo inspired by your work, I am going out to get supplies and try my hand again. I noticed you work all over the picture sometimes just laying out color and sometimes taking an area to what looks like almost completion. I'm fasinated by your method.
Oh, such fun to watch your wip, Tracy. I can't wait to see the rest of this! Already I can see the great shine of the floor and the straw stuck in the boot mud. So much detail, I can see how you can go from larger detailed to miniature work! They both suit your style
Thanks Janie, the 'putting it all together' bit takes probably as long as the actual painting but I do have a great deal of fun creating the little world!
Thank you Gina, they are great little creatures aren't they? The model for this was wandering around the garden unpeturbed by kids, dogs and a silly woman with a camera :) This one will be out later in the year. If you would like to find a stockist drop me an email and I'll see if I can help.
Thank you Janice :)
Barbara, thank you - I think hearing that someone is inspired to pull out their paints again is just about the nicest compliment! As far as technique goes, I'm all over the place so don't listen to me :) I often take an area to a nearly finshed state because it keeps my interest up - these are quite large paintings (for me) and packed with detail, so finishing some parts as I go stops me getting bored with the ugly stage as I work through the layers. Good luck to you and I hope you get a huge amount of enjoyment out of painting again!
Thanks Barbara (oh - two Barbs!). I'll try and remember to post more sections as I go, I'm bad for remembering to take pics.
I hope you don't string us along too long on this one! I'm dying to see the finish! I love your sense of humor...it's the icing on the cake of marvelous painting!
Superb as always Tracey. Love your miniatures. I have no idea how you get so much into a small work, it's amazing.
Love this one.
Wonderful! The composition is beautiful, but the hedgehog is the star of this piece. I love his textured fur! And that egg....brilliant!
