Eider ducks and Labradors

eider duck miniature paiting copyright Tracy Hall'Common Eider' © Tracy Hall 2009

My latest miniature is of an Eider drake having a snooze (with a ghost penny for scale). Being right on the shore we get a lot of these wonderful ducks meandering past, or just sitting about, and they are known locally as 'dunters'. They are surprisingly big, but I think the best thing about them is their call which seems to carry for miles...if you have never heard them, do take a moment to hear them on the RSPB site (click on 'listen'). If you stand outside on a still evening it sounds like a bunch of gossips gathered on the beach cooing over the latest juicy story :)

And below is what I have been doing during the day lately. Both paintings have some of my more imaginative titles. Really must work on that.

Both of the paintings are really terrific but the doggies made my heart smile.

Wow Tracy, these are real nice. I can't believe the amount of detail you have on your Labrador painting. How long did it take you to paint it?

Wonderful work yet again. Love the Labs (of course!) and the sounds of the Eider ducks and your description made my morning :)

Great pieces, both of these Tracy. You did a wonderful job on the wet rocks! Thanks for the Eider listen. I played it and my husband, working upstairs, had his speakers on. I IM'd him what you said about "a bunch of gossips". His response was "that was a duck??" ha!

Great painting Tracy. I can actually taste the salt off that rock! Lovely colours in the stones too!

Beautiful work Tracy!
I really like how you've done the labs; from what I've been told, the yellows are the calmest, with the chocolates and blacks being more energetic, which I can see in your painting...Black pup is into something, choc pup is thinking about getting into something (or bothering mom) and the yellows are all being good, cute and calm!

And the mini is great, once again...gorgeous rocks!

Thanks Kim - weve never had labs, I didnt know that. Lesley would know I bet, and I'm very grateful to her, Holly and Casey for their help on this one :)

Just could not resist replying to Kim's message. :) The Labradors we have had have all been great, calm and obedient (never had a chocolate) but the black pup in the front (Casey) turned out to be the quietest, gentlest and most endearing of them all. We have been sooo lucky :)
