16" x 12" watercolour on Saunders Waterford
Flowers large and small today! This is the time of year - here anyway - when the opium poppies (Papaver somniferum) are out in force. They seed themselves everywhere in the garden and seem to require only the merest suggestion of soil to grow. They are in the pathways and sand as much as the flower beds. Those in the poorest situations grow in miniature....tiny, but perfectly formed replicas of their more fortunate siblings. This is a commission drawn from the garden, so the timing was good. Almost as if it was planned that way :)
I've also been working on a miniature painting of roses from my parents garden. Hopefully I will have it finished in the next couple of days. Its 2.25" x 1.75" and I have no idea what variety of rose it is. Shown about half way through below:

Absolutely beautiful!
Both are beautiful. I love your work.
Lovely work as always Tracy. It reminds of a mass of opium poppies I had one year. They're gorgeous.
Thank you Kim, Bella and Jeanette, I'm very pleased you like them!
These are both gorgeous!! Makes me want to pick up my brushes again. Amazing work!!
That's very kind of you Jennie. Your drawings are beautiful!
A kindred spirit!
This is absolutely lovely! I love poppies, for their beauty but even moreso for that tenacity you mentioned!
My grandmother warned me that they would get everywhere - she's an amazing gardener, but definitely thinks of poppies as weeds - but I've never stopped being delighted when I find one in a new, bizarre spot! Especially those tiny ones - they're my favorites - they always seem to be hiding behind larger plants and discovering them while weeding always feels like finding a secret treasure!
Hi Angela - I certainly agree, they are such a delight wherever they find to grow, and the little ones are just adorable!
