Swans on Stenness Loch © Tracy Hall 20091.75" x 2.25" (shown enlarged) watercolour on board
My latest miniature painting is of a mute swan cob and signet. The family were enjoying the sunshine on Stenness loch - and we enjoyed our picnic lunch on the bank watching them. We have a resident pair on our local loch as well, but if you're ever in Orkney, Stenness and Harray lochs are almost always guaranteed to provide wonderful 'swan-watching' opportunities.
Once I figured out how to record videos with my camera on location (I know, you've probably all been doing it for years but I'm a bit slow with technology) I have been finding them a great help back in the studio. I thought you might like to see a bit of one from that day which I was able to use to help me create this painting. Along with sketches, notes and photos it is just another very useful tool when you're trying to recapture a moment. As you can see, they were far more interested in the pondweed than us!

Hi Tracy. Just getting back to reading your blog as I've been gone and LOVE this one. The water is just unbelieveably realistic. I am always in awe that you can achieve this with a mini. Really beautiful painting.
Wow - this is my first visit and I am excited to find your blog. I love watercoler. I also paint watercolor but it has been nearly 2 years since I picked up my brushes. Looking at your paintings makes me want to dig them out.
