Golden Pheasant miniature painting

Golden Pheasant © Tracy Hall 2009
2.25" x 3.25" watercolour on rag board

One of our neighbours keeps a variety of pheasants in large aviaries in his garden, including the amazing looking goldens. They are very speedy and nervy birds, so its no wonder they are apparently hard to observe in the wild. (Mind you, with those colours perhaps its hardly surprising). I wanted to do a miniature of them and thought I would put them in a woodland setting which is what they prefer - but have had a terrible time trying to get the colours to scan correctly for some reason. This is definitely one that looks much better in real life! Its the best I can do for now, will try again another day. (Update: tried again, hopefully this is better. Also added the penny for scale - a new 'ghost' penny, thanks to an idea from fellow miniaturist Barbara Freeman!)

Also Artists & Illustrators Magazine contacted me a little while ago to use one of my paintings for their Flowers and Gardens feature in the June edition, which arrived the other day. Its certainly a nice big picture and lovely to be asked!

Tracy...this one is possibly your best yet. Just can't believe you can get those colors...and it's a mini???? Great job.
And Congrats on your selection. How exciting for you. We'll have to see if we can get that edition. You will post to AC soon????

Thanks Mollie, in my fight with the scan I forgot to add the penny to give an idea of size. Wish I could crack getting good scans of the minis, not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks Gayle - I must confess I've never seen the magazine before.

Brilliant work Tracy, these Golden Pheasants are so eye catching! Love the background as well. (Wish I could suggest something to help with the scans.)The art group and I are looking for the magazine btw. Lesley

Tracy! YOur work just blows me away! Will this one go in the fall shows here? I don't know how you do it! And congrats on the painting in the magazine. I don't remember seeing this one before. I sure love it...I'll have to look for the magazine at the bookstore and pick one up, (or maybe I have to order it). Gazing at your work is so inspiring!

Thanks lesley. I'll crack the scans yet! It must be the fact that they are so small I guess. They always seem to look fuzzy.

Thanks Mary, thats sweet of you. Not sure where this one is going yet :) Make sure you enter both the US mini society shows this year!

Amazing pictures from your game camera on your blog judy!!! I don't think I would venture out after dark if I lived there:)

Beautiful as always Tracy! I was just looking through one of my favourite watercolour books today and noticed your name - so neat to recognize one of my "blog neighbours"! (Watercolour Artist's Flower Handbook)

Thanks Angela, glad you like that book too :)
