Goldcrest Miniature Painting

goldcrest watercolour painting in miniature'Goldcrest' © Tracy Hall 2009
1.75" x 2.25" watercolour miniature (shown much enlarged)

Goldcrests are the smallest UK birds at about 3 - 3.5", and although they are more associated with woodland we still get to see them in Orkney. I photographed this little fellow in the garden a few years back and, although he did model for me in the Orkney Book of Birds, I knew I would do another painting of him eventually if I could decide on the surroundings. I was looking at lichen this week and thought the colours seem to mimic the bird, then added the primrose and nettles to try and put his minute size in perspective. I hope you think it works (and again, the penny is only there for scale - I didn't paint it in.)

Lovely painting Tracy. The lichen compliments this wee fella beautifully. I think my cat ate one of these last summer, what a terror. Sadly my knowledge of what birds are in our area here in west of Ireland is broadened by what our cats drag in.

You have the perfect setting for this little fellow. The colours do blend with the bird and make it look very natural.

I can see why you wanted to paint this bird.

wondering how do you manage to get so much of detail in such a small painting?

We have some cats like that as well, April, but they do seem more interested in the rodent population than the feathered one.

Thanks Jeanette!

Hi Ajay, thanks for stopping by. I use brushes with a fine tip and a magnifying glass. And I fiddle endlessly. Super work on your blog and really interesting to read about your part of the world!

Hi Tracy. Didn't get to comment on the other blog on this piece because I was out of town, but I just LOVE this. Your lichen work is wonderful, and your soft colors are beautiful. Of course, your little star is also marvelous!!
